36- I am Charlie. Caricaturists, take your pencils!

I AM CHARLIE - CARICATURISTS, TAKE YOUR PENCILS!

Today, I won't talk to you about food or agriculture. Why?

Because in these days, I cannot publish anything which is not related to the attack against Charlie Hebdo.
This is both a way of mourning, of respect, and a sort of hangover. All I can post seems to me little, without interest, given the enormous consequence of this despicable act.
Because it must be said that it is despicable, and it's mostly a sign of weakness of mind, a complete lack of intellectual argument, or rather a denial of the value of intelligence.
Those targeted were columnists and caricaturists, often excessive (it is also the proper of caricature), but whose only purpose was the defense of freedom of thought, freedom of press and freedom of expression, regardless of religion, race or political affiliation.
That's why the shock is so important, even among people who, until then, disliked or hated Charlie Hebdo.
Suddenly, with this multiple senseless murder, everyone realized the importance, in a democracy, to have a handful of cartoonists, often excessive, which constantly remind us that our freedoms have a cost, are fragile, and that they are attacked from all sides. Caricaturists are the defenders of our freedoms.
I am Charlie. "I don't agree with what you say, but will fight to the death for your right to say it." Voltaire (1694-1778)

This crime is primarily an attack on the values of freedom that France, like many democracies around the world, included in their constitutions.

The politically correctness, which has gradually invaded our daily lives, kills freedom of thought, freedom of press and freedom of expression.

What is the problem?
Our societies do not prepare their citizens to understand caricature.
The caricature has a real social and political function. It is used to highlight and criticize abuses.
Who will criticize a normal situation? There is nothing to say, because it's normal. The caricature always attacks excesses and drifts. And that's very healthy.
The caricature is and must remain a sort of safeguard for freedoms and institutions.
But to get the scope caricature seeks, the people must have been prepared to understand it, to interpret it positively. Otherwise, it happens that we see more and more, and that led to these despicable attacks, I mean misunderstanding and so the feeling of aggression.
The reactions among young people from high schools, are rejecting the attack, but above criticism and misunderstanding of caricatures. Nobody explained to them what they are for, what they mean, and that they have a reason to exist. They do not see social criticism. They only see that aggression against religion.
The caricatures about Islam, do not try to hurt Muslims, nor to criticize Islam or the Prophet. They are excessive? It's possible. But they only denounced the warlike interpretations that are made of sacred texts, and extremist drifts that occur in the world.
The problem is that a caricature always has a target, and that target is not going to enjoy.

Our society is weakening because it has given up, for many years, to teach its own foundations to children. It educates, it teaches science and languages, but it doesn't teach them any more over the basics of the life in society.

When I was a child, in elementary school, we had moral lessons. It was about the ways to be polite, to say hello, to respect the elderly, to respect differences, in short, to behave in the society.
Later, in college, we had civics courses. This was the basis of the institutions work, what is civic duty, why we must vote, what are the laws, etc. In short, the operation and the social values of our society.
It was in the last century. Should we conclude that there has been progress in this direction?
The latest events show us, if it was still necessary, that no. Not only there has been no progress, but on the contrary, our societies regress in terms of tolerance and social and civic behavior. At the same time, religions, political parties, trade unions and extremism of all stripes have taken over.
There is a long time that these values are not transmitted in the majority of families any more. The basics of social and civic behavior are transmitted through private lessons, often partisan or sectarian.
Who teaches the values of democracy, of freedom?
Who teaches morality and social normality in order to see and understand what are drifts?

The state must take control again on the civic education of its citizens. School has a fundamental role to play in the education of tomorrow's citizens. The scope and consequences of all these ideologized teachings, will always be lower if children who receive them, also received a civic training, tolerant and without ideological bias.

Here in Spain, a few years ago, held a violent societal debate about the relevance of adding to the educative cursus, a formation about citizenship. It was established by the Socialist government of the time, and then eliminated by the following Conservative government.
This program was not well prepared, too partisan on some sensitive issues, but I regret that instead of deleting it, the Conservative government, now in power, has not taken the time to reform it. The Spanish society has, till now, less suffered from sectarianisms of all kinds. But what will happen tomorrow? The drift observed in France and in other democratic countries, will probably occur here too.

I firmly believe that the EU should require member countries to include social and civic education in school curricula, from small classes.
This is one of the best ways, without violence and with a long-term effectiveness, to reduce the risk of sectarian aberrations which we are currently witnessing, which seem to strengthen.

Today I took part to the silent march, here in Seville, to mark my horror at these barbaric acts.
But this march, like all others, across France and the world will be useless if no one is aware of the existing malaise and its causes, and if no one puts in place the means to (re) develop a high quality social and civic teaching.

I'm Charlie.

Yet there will always be a shadow over these support movements, the shadow of recovery.
Today, in the great march of Paris, were present more officers or senior representatives of governments that impose in their respective countries a strict control of the press, and that struggle at the institutional level against freedom of thought, freedom of the press and freedom of expression.
What should we think?
Political recovery or statement of intent?
CARICATURISTS, TAKE YOUR PENCILS!

35- Wishes Culturagriculture 2015

HAPPY NEW AGRICULTURAL YEAR  2015

29- Culturagriculture and the social networks

Summer is on its end, and I finally published little in this period I'm supposed to have more time. It seems that this is not the case.
But I will still put together some interesting subjects, I will send you little by little.

I mostly spent time studying social networks, and I realized the incredible source of information, inspiration and diffusion they represent.
So I enhanced my personal and blogger activity through several channels:
Facebook, which I told you about a few weeks ago,
Twitter, that I discovered a very little time ago and I appreciate a lot. Very short messages allow me to open only the items that seem to be interesting,
LinkedIn, more professional network, but very active. I'm a member for several years, and I have expanded it in recent weeks
Google + is more general and it's an easy expansion network.

So I decided to use these four networks to diffuse. My blog requires a lot of work and time, because I want to keep the trilingual format as I have readers in over 50 countries. But it does not allow me to react quickly on topical subjects.
These networks allow me to publish, with no translation, the articles I find here and there, which I consider complementary to my blog.

I remind you that my goal with this blog is to popularize a knowledge of agriculture, to consumers who often do not know much, but receive significant media hype. This hype is generally very negative. It is fashionable to think that agriculture pollutes, destroys the environment, over-exploits the poor, enslaves, or even is dangerous to health.
Agriculture, for the stranglehold of some ignorant or lobbyists, unconcerned about the consequences of nonsenses they tell, is being converted into a huge problem, then it is a simple necessity. It is very easy to ruin an important and fragile activity, as agriculture. It's about food, and the fear of poisoning is an extremely powerful weapon.
Politicians, responsible for legislating, are generally more concerned about the reactions of the public, that about the public good. So they let guide their behaviour by those who shout louder, instead of following the path of reason, common sense or science, when it is not popular.
O surprise! I do not agree, and I try to explain why, from my farmer perspective.
I try to explain what agriculture is, how it has evolved and continues to evolve, how and why food safety has never reached such high levels that currently, the negative and positive impacts of the agriculture on the environment, etc ...

My problem? The diffusion. And this is when I need you. The progression of readings is too slow for my taste, and I wish that you, my readers, reveal the blog and/or my pages on social networks, to expand the public, especially to people unrelated to agriculture. These people are my primary target, and they are the most difficult to reach for me. My networks consist mainly in professionals, and I guess they generally have positions close to mine. I need to reach a larger public to gain in efficiency, compared to my target audience.
So I request your active participation, with the spread, through your own networks, of articles that interest you most.

I begin an ambitious and difficult task I will not be able to achieve alone. I found many other blogs or web pages, often very well done and interesting, well documented and illustrated, but very few are actually aimed at consumers.

If we want to improve the image of agriculture, to buyers of products of our work of farmers, it is to them that we have to go.
So I need to broaden my audience. And for that, I need you.

So here are my contacts on social networks. You can choose one, or take them all. Publications that do not come from the blog, are aproximately the same on all. Variants basically come from the time that I spend day after day, and sometimes from the quality of the link, occasionally difficult to copy on other pages.

You can directly receive notifications of new publications by entering your contact details in the "Receive notification by email" in the upper right of the blog.

Facebook: Culturagriculture
You will also receive new publications of the blog and related to it, directly on your own Facebook page if you click "Follow".

LinkedIn: Christophe Bouchet
Again, you will receive new publications of the blog and related to it, if you request to be connected with me, something I almost always agree.

Twitter: @culturagricultu
Similarly, you will receive new publications of the blog and related to it, if you decide to click "follow".

Again, you receive new publications of the blog and related to it, adding me to your "circles."

Here, you have the choice of means. I trust you to expand diffusion.
My goal is the general good, and I need your help and your participation.

Thank you and goodbye.

9- About my blog

Today, a very short post because I want you may know that I am about to enter a period of professional turbulence. Fortunately, I have no employment problems, but I'm not about to have scheduling problems. From tomorrow, I will start thinning tasks (manual removal of fruits, so that those who are left get larger size and higher quality). In just over one month begins the harvest period, which will last until 20 or 25 of June. It means that during the next 100 days, my most intense period of the year and I have to be available 7 days a week, with a difficult schedule, leaving me little time to write. I will not abandon my blog or my readers, it just started! And I have yet many things to tell you. But I will have difficulty keeping up with a more or less weekly publication.
So do not be surprised if I publish less, or if I publish a little shorter topics.
See you soon , then.

To thank you for your patience and interest, some statistics of the blog, which I find amazing, today at 19:00:
- 64 days of existence
- 9 posts (not counting this one)
- 1458 readings
- 18 countries
Spain 817 readings
France 288
USA 252
Germany 59
Switzerland 10
Then come, in alphabetical order:
Belgium, Canada, China, Colombia, South Korea, Finland, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Ukraine

25- Culturagriculture on Facebook

I just created a page on Facebook, based on this blog.

What for?
Because I do not want to change the philosophy of the blog, that is to say, to write on general topics related to agriculture, with the aim of popularization. The posts are intended for consumers that we are all, not necessarily aware of the daily problems of agriculture.
I also want to keep the permanent trilingual character in the blog. The many readings that  already receive my publications, in more than 50 countries, confirm me in this idea.

Yet this is, for me, a big work for writing and translation. In addition, I have to provide work and family activities in a normal way, leaving me little time for writing.

So I can not quickly publish an article in French on an interesting topic, because my Spanish or English readers would not understand it.

So I decided to create this page on Facebook where I can share quickly and as often as necessary, articles from other blogs, general or scientific publications, in only one language, and that seem interesting to me, and complementary to the blog.

So I invite you to follow me also on Facebook.

See you soon

0- Why this blog?

Hello! My name is Christophe Bouchet, and I undertake the responsibility of the production for an important fruit production and commercialization company, in the Seville area, in Andalusia (Spain).

I am thinking in this blog for a long time, but I was hesitating. But encouraged by my wife Katia and by my friend and agronomical advisor Miguel Ybarra (who is just creating his blog, about agronomy), I start it.

I often receive solicitation from my family, my friends, my neighbors, who make me all types of questions about agriculture and its environmental impact, or about the grower’s job. I also notice the impressive amount of misconceptions and false information circulating about it. At last, I daily record (and suffer) numerous and repeated attacks against agriculture in general, and especially against conventional agriculture (that is from no organic production), generally considered as an essential source of pollution.

Nevertheless agriculture is metamorphosing, in a many years movement. Important efforts are done at all degrees of the food production and retailing chain, with huge investments in human and economic means. But all that work, although widely diffused in the professional circles, is totally unknown to the public, due to a substantially no communication. Consumers generally receive very few information about the origin or the production methods of the food they buy, although they are very interested.
I want to write about the grower’s job, about crops management, about market operating, about foods themselves, but from my perspective of farmer. My specialty and my professional experience, make me mainly write about problematic of plants, and especially fruits. But a lot of subjects may be extrapolated to other agricultural productions.

I mainly intend this blog to consumers, and it’s why I want to put no technical or simplified information, destined to extend the general culture of everybody. It is open to all who are interested in what they eat, who have questions about food prices, food taste, food quality or how food is produced. Some points of view are personal and may displease. It will be the occasion of interesting debates.

I can´t undertake a regularity of publication, because I have very few free time. Nevertheless I want to try to systematically publish

In Spanish (my adoption and working daily language, that I learned in the Andalusian fields, and that might have a strange French-Andalusian accent),

In French (my maternal language, which, at first, I handle well!)

In English (my knowledge is quite poor and rusted, but I hope to still be able to write something understandable, in spite of using it very little).
It's a lot of work, but i think worth.

Wish me good luck, and if you think it’s interesting, please share the link of the blog, I want to reach a wide audience.
Thank you and see you soon for my first post.
